B2B brand agency what brand work is, costs and does

Brand is the only thing you may spend six figures on that your accountant is not allowed to put on the balance sheet, if you built it yourself.

This guide explains why, what UK rebrands actually cost according to published public contracts, and how to tell whether yours is working.

A note on who we are: GTM Quest is not a design studio.

We write B2B positioning and messaging, and build recognition through founder-led content and LinkedIn.

For identity design, the brand specialists below are the people to brief.

01/ the category

What a B2B brand agency does three jobs, priced very differently

"Brand agency" covers three jobs that are often sold as one.

Knowing which you are buying is most of the negotiation.

Brand strategy

Positioning, architecture, naming and messaging.

Mostly thinking and workshops, and the part that decides whether the rest is worth anything.

Identity design

Logo, palette, type, motion, guidelines and an asset library.

The visible deliverable, and the one clients judge the invoice against.

Brand campaigns

Turning the identity into work that runs.

This overlaps heavily with a B2B advertising agency.

The difference is who owns the idea and who owns the media.

Most UK B2B agencies will quote for all three; few are equally good at all three, and the strategy phase is where the difference shows.

Ask for strategy and design to be priced separately.

You are buying in a big, fragmented market: DCMS counted 269,655 businesses in the UK creative industries in March 2025.

The agency pitching you may be small.

That is not a criticism.

It is a reason to ask exactly who does the work.

02/ where we fit

B2B brand strategy the parts we do

We are a go-to-market agency.

Brand matters to us because buyers choose brands they remember, so we do the parts of brand work that decide what you are remembered for, and the reach that makes it stick.

01

Positioning and messaging

Who you are for, why you and not the alternative, and the few things every piece of marketing should repeat, written against the objections buyers actually raise.

02

Buying situations mapped

The situations in which buyers think of your category, and which of them your brand should own.

We use category entry points, explained below.

03

Reach through people

Founder-led LinkedIn content and paid LinkedIn to your market, so the name is familiar before sales gets in touch.

See demand generation.

04

Share of search tracking

A simple monthly read of your brand's share of category searches, as a free proxy for whether the work is being remembered.

not us

What we don't do

Logo and identity design, naming, brand guidelines and asset libraries.

For those, brief a brand studio: the specialists below, or the studios in the public contracts.

03/ the strange bit

The asset you are not allowed to book built or bought?

Under IAS 38, internally generated brands, mastheads, publishing titles, customer lists and items similar in substance shall not be recognised as intangible assets (paragraph 63).

UK GAAP says the same: FRS 102 paragraph 18.8C requires spending on internally generated brands, logos, publishing titles and customer lists to be recognised as an expense.

Pick a situation.

Where did the brand come from?

Expense

An expense, never an asset

Every pound spent building the brand reduces this year's profit and creates an asset that appears nowhere.

IAS 38 paragraph 64 gives the reason: the spending cannot be distinguished from the cost of developing the business as a whole.

  • ✓ No brand on the balance sheet
  • ✓ Hard to defend in a budget meeting

That is why brand budgets lose arguments to demand-generation budgets.

The practical consequence: brand spending shows up in a number a CFO looks at, and the value it builds does not.

Build the case with evidence on memory and reach instead.

The next three sections cover it.

04/ the uncomfortable evidence

Nobody knows which brand they just saw distinctive assets in B2B

LinkedIn's B2B Institute tested how well buyers link brand assets to the right brand.

In the cloud category, only 5% of the audience associate Dell's shade of blue with Dell, while 10% mistake it for Microsoft.

Dell's ads fared worse: 2% linked them to Dell, and 11% thought they were Microsoft's.

Across the colours of five cloud brands, only 5.75% of participants attributed them correctly.

The Institute found that assets were misattributed to Microsoft nearly twice as often as to any other brand.

So an indistinct ad can end up building memory for your largest competitor.

Two caveats travel with this data: it comes from a 2022 study run with Distinctive BAT, a commercial partner, and the examples are US brands.

There is no UK B2B equivalent we could find.

Its wider research, Better, Bolder B2B Branding, argues that logos and colours alone are not enough to stand out.

05/ how brand works

Category entry points how B2B buyers remember brands

The useful model for B2B brand is not awareness.

It is how many buying situations your brand is linked to in a buyer's memory.

Prof. Jenni Romaniuk of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute calls these category entry points: the cues buyers use to reach their memories when a buying situation arises.

What a CEP is

Internal cues (motives, emotions) and external cues (location, time) that trigger a buying situation.

They decide which brands are in the first "go-to" list a buyer thinks of.

  • ✓ Buying situations, not features

This is how we plan founder-led content and LinkedIn campaigns: each piece attached to one buying situation, the set widening across the year.

06/ the honest answer

How to measure B2B brand and why nobody can benchmark it

We could not find a published B2B brand-tracking benchmark from a standard-setter or trade body.

Every "B2B brand benchmark" we found came from a vendor with tracking to sell.

So measure what you can check yourself.

Share of search is the most practical proxy.

Les Binet presented it at the IPA's EffWorks Global in 2020: your brand's searches divided by the searches for all brands in the category, from Google Trends, free, with data back to 2004.

In his tests across three categories it correlated with market share and tended to move before it, by up to a year for cars.

It is not a perfect predictor (Binet said so), and small B2B categories may have too little search volume for a clean read.

Pair it with reach among your target accounts, the buying situations buyers link you to, and the share of new opportunities where the buyer already knew your name.

Brand and activation together

Binet and Field's B2B analysis found efficiency peaked at around 46% of budget on brand and 54% on activation.

Brand work is not a replacement for demand generation; it is what makes demand generation cheaper over time.

07/ what you can own

Names, trade marks and imitation registering a company is not protecting a brand

The distinction costs people real money.

Companies House checks company names; the trade mark register is where brand ownership lives.

QuestionWhat the rules saySource
Does registering our company name protect it?Only against another company registering the same name: a company must not be registered by a name that is "the same as" one already on the index. It is not trade mark protection.Companies Act 2006, s.66
What can be a trade mark?Words, sounds, logos, colours or a combination.UK IPO
Can we register our tagline?Often not. A mark cannot be "too common and non-distinctive". The IPO's own example is "we lead the way". That describes a lot of B2B taglines.UK IPO
What does an application cost?£205 for a trade mark application from 1 April 2026, up from £170. It is the first rise since 1998. Many pages still quote the old fee.UK IPO
Can we imitate a competitor's look?Ads must not take unfair advantage of a competitor's trade mark or distinguishing mark, or present a product as an imitation of a protected one.CAP Code 3.42 to 3.43

Check trade mark availability before the identity work starts, not after.

This is general information, not legal advice.

08/ the number nobody publishes

What a UK rebrand costs from published public contracts

There is no primary source for a general UK rebrand price range; every "£X to £Y" we found was published by an agency selling rebrands.

Public bodies must publish what they award, so these are figures anyone can check.

Buyer and agencyScopeValue and source

Health Data Research UK / IE DesignStakeholder discovery, brand and sub-brand structure, concept testing, design and logo assets (2025).£41,637.50 · Contracts Finder

Read these with three caveats.

They are agency fees for strategy and identity, not implementation.

Signage, web, stationery and fleet sit outside them.

They are contract values, not final spend.

And public-sector buying is not private-sector buying.

Search Contracts Finder and Find a Tender for "brand" or "rebrand" to find more with scopes close to yours.

10/ what to hand them

The brand brief ask for a decision, not a look

Brand briefs fail differently from campaign briefs: they ask for a look instead of a decision.

Answer these five and every agency quotes for the same thing.

01

What decision is this?

A new position, a merger of brands, a name change, a refresh to fit a bigger company?

Each is a different project.

02

What must stay?

The assets buyers already link to you.

Throwing away the few that work is the most expensive mistake in a rebrand.

03

Which buying situations?

The situations you want the brand linked to (your category entry points), so the identity has a job.

04

What can we own?

Trade mark searches before design, and a plan to register the mark in the classes that matter.

05

How will we know it worked?

Share of search, reach among target accounts, and whether buyers arrive already knowing the name.

Ask for strategy, identity and implementation priced separately, and ask who will do the work by name.

11/ specialists

B2B brand FAQ

What UK B2B teams ask before they commission brand work, and what the standards and registers say.

Three jobs often sold as one: brand strategy (positioning, naming, messaging), identity design (logo, type, guidelines) and brand campaigns.

Ask for strategy and design to be priced separately.

See three jobs.

Brand is one part of the route to market, and what a go-to-market strategy agency does shows where it fits.

We do positioning, messaging and brand reach through founder-led content and LinkedIn.

We don't design identities or name companies.

See where we fit and the brand specialists.

Not if you built it.

IAS 38 says internally generated brands shall not be recognised as intangible assets, and FRS 102 requires the spending to be recognised as an expense.

Acquired brands are treated differently; ask your auditor.

Deciding who the brand is for, what it should be remembered for, and which buying situations it should be linked to, then saying that consistently.

It comes before identity design and before campaigns.

Marketing that builds memory among buyers who are not buying yet, so your name comes to mind when they are.

Binet and Field put the B2B efficiency optimum at around 46% brand, 54% activation.

Share of search is a free, checkable proxy: your brand's searches as a share of all brands' searches in the category, from Google Trends.

Add reach among target accounts and how often new buyers already know your name.

No. Companies House only stops a company being registered by a name that is the same as one already on its index.

Trade mark registration at the UK IPO is where ownership lives.

A trade mark application costs £205 from 1 April 2026, up from £170.

Many pages still quote the old fee.

Often not.

The UK IPO says a trade mark cannot be "too common and non-distinctive", and its example is "we lead the way", which describes most B2B taglines.

The strongest evidence is not from agencies.

LinkedIn's B2B Institute found only 5% of a cloud audience linked Dell's blue to Dell, and 10% thought it was Microsoft.

Indistinct brands risk building memory for competitors.

The cues buyers use to recall brands in a buying situation.

Across 17 business insurance products, more CEPs linked to a brand meant lower defection in 16 (Ehrenberg-Bass).
