GTM expert · go-to-market expertise · London
A GTM expert has built and scaled go-to-market systems before, and knows which problem to fix first.
GTM Quest is a London go-to-market agency led by operators: we diagnose what is holding revenue back, set the strategy, and build the system that carries it out.
We build positioning, ICP, outbound, content and the data underneath with your team, then run it together or hand it over.
This page covers what we do, and how to find and vet any GTM expert, including us.

01/ our service
Six parts, in order.
The strategy is only worth having if it turns into lists, messages and channels that run.
So we build those too, and they stay yours.
01
We read the pipeline, the lost deals and the channels, and talk to sales and to customers.
Then we name the one thing holding revenue back, not a list of twenty.
02
Competitive alternatives, what only you do, and the market frame where it matters.
It becomes the words on the website, in outbound and in the sales deck.
03
The segment to win first, written down with sales, then the accounts that fit and the people in each buying group, enriched and verified.
04
Channels, sequencing, owners and the measures that matter, on one page your team can run.
Built for the stage you are at, not a template.
05
A Postgres campaign database above your CRM, enriched in Clay, with signals that say which accounts are warming.
Outbound, content and LinkedIn run from it.
06
Documentation, training and, when you are ready, help writing the role and interviewing the person who takes it over.
This is the same system we describe on our GTM agency page.
For outbound on its own, see our lead generation service.
02/ where an expert helps
Most teams call a GTM expert for one of these reasons.
Pick yours to see what we would do first.
Which sounds most like you?
Unpredictable pipeline
We trace where deals come from and where they stall (segment, message, channel or sales process), and fix the one that limits everything else.
Best for teams with product-market fit and patchy pipeline.
New market entry
Entering the UK or Europe, or a new segment at home: we pick the first segment to win, test the message with real buyers, and build the accounts and channels to reach it.
Best for overseas companies entering the UK, and UK teams entering Europe.
Between hires
When a CRO or head of marketing leaves, or before you can justify one, we set the direction and keep the system running.
Then we help you hire the permanent leader.
Best when momentum matters more than a title.
Product launch
We decide who it is for, what it replaces and why now before the launch plan, then carry it through the website, outbound, content and sales enablement.
Best for a second product or a move upmarket.
Stalled outbound
We rebuild the list around accounts with a reason to talk now, protect your domains, and rewrite the first message around the buyer’s problem.
Best for teams whose reply rates have fallen.
Before you hire
Hiring before the motion works is expensive: a new in-house SDR takes 3.0 months on average to ramp, and median annual SDR attrition is 40%.
We prove the channel and message first, then hand the playbook to the hire.
Best for founders moving on from founder-led sales.
What it costs. Every engagement is scoped and quoted in writing after the discovery call.
Data and tools are separate lines.
03/ the first 90 days
The first target accounts agreed with you, and conversations started the same day from the founder's and team's LinkedIn, warm introductions and existing contacts. The first content goes out.
DAY 1Pipeline, deals, channels and customer interviews, alongside the first replies. One written constraint and what fixing it is worth.
WEEK 1Positioning, the beachhead segment and the ICP, agreed with the founder and sales and tested in the live conversations.
WEEKS 1 TO 2The account list, the data layer and the CRM, with sending domains warming in the background. Each channel joins as it is ready; read the replies, keep what works.
WEEKS 1 TO 4Weekly with sales: meetings held, fit, and what they became. Monthly: pipeline created.
WEEKLYWe cut what is not working and scale what is. Then we keep running it with you, or document it, train your team and step back.
MONTHS 2 TO 3A useful self-check before any call: our GTM scorecard covers the same ground as the diagnosis in week one.
04/ definition
A GTM expert (go-to-market expert) is a specialist who has repeatedly built and scaled go-to-market systems for B2B companies.
They bring pattern recognition across positioning, demand generation, sales motion and revenue operations, rather than a single channel skill.
The value is judgement: knowing which problem to fix first.
A paid-social specialist will improve your ads; a GTM expert will tell you whether ads are the problem at all.
The best GTM experts show verifiable outcomes at your stage and in your market, not generic credentials.
They should be able to walk you through a system they built, what it produced, and what they would do differently.
Diagnoses why revenue is stuck, decides positioning and the segment to win first, writes the GTM plan, and, if they are any good, builds or oversees the system that carries it out: the account list, the channels, the data and the measures.
The terms overlap.
A GTM consultant usually works on strategy and system design, often as a project (see our guide to GTM consultants).
A GTM engineer builds the automation and data layer: Clay, enrichment, sequencing.
A GTM expert is the broader label for someone senior enough to do the first and direct the second.
See our guides to GTM consultants and GTM engineers.
People search both ways.
Either way, the question is the same: can this person or team show you a go-to-market system they built that worked, for a company like yours?
05/ options
Four ways to get go-to-market help.
Many engagements combine two: an expert sets direction and someone runs delivery.
→ GTM Quest is both: we set the strategy and build the system, then run it with you or hand it over. See our agency page.
→ For fractional leaders, see our sister site Fractional Quest.
→ Prove the motion first, then hire into it. The Bridge Group found in-house SDRs take 3.0 months on average to ramp, with 40% median annual attrition.
Longer comparisons: in-house vs a GTM consultant and fractional GTM manager vs agency.
06/ how buyers buy
6sense's 2025 study of more than 4,000 buyers found 94% of buying groups had ranked their preferred vendors before first contact, and bought from that early favourite 77% of the time.
If you are not known before the buyer starts, you are rarely chosen after.
Buyers also prefer to do the work alone.
Gartner found 61% of B2B buyers prefer a rep-free buying experience, and 73% actively avoid suppliers who send irrelevant outreach.
And the group doing the buying keeps growing: Forrester puts a typical purchase at 13 internal stakeholders and nine external influencers.
Getting positioning, segment and channel right before you spend is exactly the judgement a GTM expert is for.
07/ the skills
08/ finding one
Seven steps from “we need help” to a signed engagement.
Use them on us too.
One paragraph: what is stuck, since when, and what you have tried.
It stops you buying a solution to a different problem.
Named operators with work at your stage and in your market.
Look for systems they have built, not titles or follower counts.
What the situation was, what they built, what it produced and what they would change.
Vague answers are an answer.
Ask what happened after the engagement ended.
Did the system keep running?
A short, scoped diagnostic before a long retainer.
You see how they think, they see your data.
What is delivered, who owns the data, domains and lists, and how either side leaves.
If you engage an individual through their own company, check the off-payroll working (IR35) rules.
For medium and large clients, the client decides employment status.
Documentation, training and who runs it next.
An expert who plans to stay forever is a cost, not an investment.
More on this in how to choose a GTM consultant.
09/ what it costs
GTM experts usually charge in one of three ways: a day rate for workshops and diagnostics, a fixed project fee for a defined build, or a monthly retainer for ongoing involvement.
The price depends on seniority, how hands-on the work is, and whether data and tools are included.
We don't publish a range because we could not find a published survey of GTM expert fees we trust.
At GTM Quest, every engagement is scoped and quoted in writing after the discovery call, with data, tools and sending infrastructure as separate lines.
Whoever you hire, ask for the price per deliverable, what is excluded, and the notice period.
For how consultancies structure fees, see our GTM consultant pricing guide.
10/ walk away
If the answer arrives before they have seen your pipeline, it is a template.
Nobody can guarantee what your market will do.
Ask what they will deliver instead.
A strategy nobody builds is a document.
Ask who builds the lists, the data and the channels.
Benchmarks with no link are opinions.
Ask where every number came from.
You should own the system, the data and the know-how when the engagement ends.
A good expert is happy to start with a short, scoped piece of work.

Evaluate a go-to-market expert, distinct from Google Tag Manager
Practical guide · 01
GTM also means Google Tag Manager. This guide concerns go-to-market operators: people who connect customer choice, positioning, channels and commercial execution.
Shows how buyer evidence changed the target market or proposition. A framework alone does not prove the decision was useful.
Shows the workflow, exception handling and handover. Ask what remains when their engagement ends.
Shows depth in a defined discipline and where that discipline stops. Strong channel expertise need not imply whole-function leadership.
Practical guide · 02
Use a realistic, sanitised task rather than asking for unpaid commercial strategy. Agree its boundaries and the criteria before reviewing the answer.
Give the segment, offer, sales cycle and known bottleneck. State which assumptions are uncertain.
Ask what they would investigate first, which evidence could reverse the decision and what they would leave alone.
Ask how the work would be documented and owned. Expertise that cannot be explained is difficult for your team to reuse.
Practical guide · 03
Fictional example: a founder asks for more outbound volume, but recent replies show prospects cannot distinguish the product from an incumbent.
Practical guide · 04
A scaled-company playbook may not suit an unproven offer.
Look for buyer discovery and decisions under limited evidence.
Look for repeatable operations, cross-team handoffs and resource allocation.
Practical guide · 05
A relevant reference should explain the operating difference.
Ask what was unclear or broken before the engagement.
Ask what the team could run and what still needed help.
Practical guide · 06
Give an operator enough authority without surrendering ownership.
Use scoped accounts and approvals for the agreed work.
Document ownership and remove access through the normal handover.
Practical guide · 07
A test needs a decision boundary, not a guaranteed return.
Repeat when buyer fit and delivery evidence support the approach.
Narrow or stop when evidence contradicts the core assumption.
Practical guide · 08
The reasoning is part of the deliverable.
Document alternatives, assumptions and why the chosen path made sense.
Have your team explain and run the workflow themselves.

A GTM expert provides senior strategy and judgement, often as an individual or small team.
A channel agency executes campaigns at scale.
Many engagements combine both; GTM Quest does both.
See the comparison.
Mostly the label.
Both work on strategy and system design; "expert" tends to signal seniority and hands-on experience across the whole motion.
What matters is whether they build as well as advise.
If you only want the senior judgement, without the build, see our GTM advisory.
It depends on seniority, scope and whether the work is advisory or hands-on; experts charge by day, by project or by monthly retainer.
We could not find a published fee survey we trust, so we don't quote a range.
Our own work is scoped and quoted in writing after the discovery call.
When you have product-market fit but pipeline is unpredictable, when entering a new market, when a leadership change has left a strategy gap, or before you hire your first sales or marketing team.
Prove the motion first, then hire into it.
A new in-house SDR takes 3.0 months on average to ramp and median annual SDR attrition is 40%, so hiring before the message and channel work is expensive.
Yes.
We work with overseas B2B companies entering the UK and UK companies entering Europe: choosing the first segment, testing the message with local buyers, and building the account list and channels, with UK GDPR and PECR handled.
If you engage an individual through their own limited company, the off-payroll working rules may apply.
For medium and large clients outside the public sector, the client is responsible for deciding employment status.
Engaging a firm to deliver defined work is different.
This is not tax advice.
What segment they would win first and why, how they would position you against doing nothing, what counts as a qualified meeting, where your data would live, and who runs the system after they leave.
Both.
We are a London go-to-market agency led by operators: we set the strategy and build the system, then run it with you or hand it over.
